In the series „Berufe im Profil: International“, roughly translated “Professional Profiles: international”,  the Centre for Careers and Competencies, in cooperation with the International Support Services, invited Wissal Saihi and Jean Pierre Char to the University–virtually. Both graduated with a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Passau and are now working as Software Engineers in Bavaria. Let’s find out what it means to be a Software Engineer!

What are their jobs about?

Wissal works at FotoFinder Systems GmbH, a company that produces software and hardware systems that are used in dermatology. At first, she worked in an R&D project that aims on creating a prototype of a full body 3D scanner with high texture resolution. Now she works in the AI (Artificial Intelligence) team for skin cancer detection.

Jean Pierre used to work at ONE LOGIC in Passau and recently started his new job at PagoNxt, a Santander company in Munich, which is a payment solution provider.

How did they find their jobs?

Jean Pierre studied for a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in Lebanon. Later, he came to Passau and studied M.Sc. Computer Science. During his studies, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Passau and as a working student at ONE LOGIC in Passau where he continued in a full-time position after his graduation. After more than two years there in a full-time position, he recently started a new job at PagoNxt in Munich.

After getting a degree in Telecommunications Engineering in Tunisia, Wissal studied the Master’s in Computer Science. After graduating, she works as Computer Vision Software Developer at FotoFinder Systems GmbH. Actually she already applied for a student job at the company after her first semester. Due to the lack of practical experience, she was rejected. The following semesters she visited four labs in order to gain practical experience. When applying to work on her master thesis she got accepted at FotoFinder Systems GmbH and joined them full-time after finishing her project.

What does the work of a Software Engineer look like?

If you thought about sitting in front of a computer and writing codes–that’s only a small part of a Software Engineer’s job. In reality, Software Engineers spend most of their time in meetings, answering e-mails, doing investigations because they want to avoid coding anything that is already there or that is not important, and writing the documentation. Communication and non-technical work are important too because they need to fully understand, what the customer needs are, what might be obsolete and how the technology is exactly working.

What do you need to get started as a Software Engineer?

As the tasks as a Software Engineer are diverse, you probably won’t know everything as a beginner in Software Engineering. However, it is important to have the necessary technical skills. Learn C++ and Python, and more programming languages, if you can. Understand the technology behind the software, e.g. by understanding matrixes.

And: get practical experience. Do as many labs as possible at University or work as a student assistant or working student.

Which skills are important for Software Engineers?

As mentioned above, Software Engineers spend a lot of time in meetings explaining what they do to stakeholders with tech and non-tech background. To meet the different stakeholders and explain what you are doing, communication skills are inevitable. Further, you need organizational skills, to organize your work life and your team. You need the capacity to research a topic from scratch and to keep learning along the way, as well you should know how to use the search engine starting with G in an effective way. What sounds funny at first, can make your life much easier. Most codes are somewhere in the web, but you need to understand what you are looking for and where you look for it. Lastly, you also need a good written expression for writing the reports.

You might wonder, whether you need to speak German when working in Germany. Wissal and Jean Pierre both speak German and mainly work in English, although Wissal told us, that they have kind of a “company language”. That means that they mix German and English, with some Bavarian, when talking.

Personal suggestions from Wissal and Jean Pierre:

• Figure out the industry, company size and working environment you want to work long-term in (e.g. by doing an internship)
• Do not forget about soft skills! Sometimes they are more beneficial than hard work.
• The beginning is always difficult and blurry, give it time.
• Embrace failure and learn from it.
• You can start the career you want any time you want!

In der Serie “Berufe im Profil: International“ hat das Zentrum für Karriere und Kompetenzen in Kooperation mit den International Support Services Wissal Saihi und Jean Pierre Char – virtuell – an die Universität eingeladen. Beide haben in Passau einen Master in Computer Science gemacht und arbeiten als Software Ingenieure in Bayern. Gerne berichten wir davon, was sie uns über ihre Arbeit erzählt haben.

Worum geht es in ihren Jobs?

Wissal arbeitet bei der FotoFinder Systems GmbH, einem Unternehmen, das Soft- und Hardware Systeme entwickelt, die in der Dermatologie benutzt werden. Zuerst hat sie an einem Projekt in der Forschung und Entwicklung gearbeitet, bei dem es darum ging einen Prototyp eines 3D Körperscanners zu entwickeln. Mittlerweile arbeitet sie im AI (Artificial Intelligence)-Team an einem Projekt zur Hautkrebserkennung.

Jean Pierre hat bis Ende des letzten Jahres bei ONE LOGIC in Passau gearbeitet. Im Januar hat er  seinen neuen Job bei PagoNxt, einem Satander Unternehmen, das Zahlungslösungen anbietet, in München angefangen.

Wie haben sie ihre Jobs gefunden?

Jean Pierre hat im Libanon einen Bachelor in Informatik absolviert. Später kam er nach Passau und studierte im Master Informatik. Während seines Studiums arbeitete er als Studentische Hilfskraft an der Universität. Zudem war es als Werkstudent bei ONE LOGIC in Passau tätig, wo er nach seinem Abschluss weiterhin Vollzeit arbeitete. Nach mehr als zwei Jahren dort, hat er nun nach München zu PagoNxt gewechselt.

Nach ihrem Abschluss als Telekommunikationsingenieurin in Tunesien, studierte Wissal den Master in Informatik. Seit ihrem Abschluss arbeitet sie als Computer Vision Software Developer bei der FotoFinder Systems GmbH. Eigentlich hat sie sich dort schon nach dem ersten Semester als Werkstudentin beworben, wurde allerdings abgelehnt, da sie zu wenig praktische Erfahrung vorweisen konnte. Im folgenden Semester besuchte sie gleich vier Labs, um praktische Erfahrung zu sammeln. Als sie sich daraufhin für einen Platz für ihre Masterarbeit erneut bei der FotoFinder Systems GmbH beworben hat, hatte sie Erfolg und wurde nach Beenden ihrer Abschlussarbeit als Mitarbeiterin übernommen.

Wie sieht die Arbeit eines Software Ingenieurs aus?

Am Computer sitzen und programmieren! Falsch gedacht. Programmieren ist nur ein kleiner Teil der Arbeit eines Software Ingenieurs. In der Realität verbringen Software Ingenieure viel Zeit damit, ihre Ideen in Meetings zu erklären und auszutauschen, E-Mails zu beantworten, mit Recherchen und mit dem Verfassen der Dokumentation.  Diese Aufgaben sind die Grundlage für das Programmieren selbst, da sie verstehen müssen, was genau die Bedürfnisse der Kunden sind, welche Elemente eventuell überflüssig sind und wie die Technologie genau funktioniert.

Was braucht man für einen Einstieg als Software-Ingenieur*in?

Da die Aufgaben von Software-Ingenieuren sehr unterschiedlich sind, werden Sie vermutlich am Anfang noch nicht alles können. Trotzdem ist es wichtig, das technische Verständnis zu haben. Von den Programmiersprachen sind v.a. C++ und Python zu nennen, allerdings ist jede Programmiersprache für den Einstieg hilfreich. Zudem ist es essentiell, die Technologie hinter der Software zu verstehen, z.B. Matrizen.

Und: Praktische Erfahrung. Besuchen Sie so viele Labs an der Universität wie möglich oder suchen Sie sich eine Stelle als Werkstudierende*r.

Welche Fähigkeiten sind für Software Ingenieure wichtig?

Wie bereits erwähnt, verbringen Software Ingenieure viel Zeit in Meetings, in denen sie Stakeholdern mit verschiedenen technischen Hintergründen erklären, was sie tun. Um die verschiedenen Stakeholder richtig anzusprechen, sind Kommunikationsfähigkeiten unabdingbar. Außerdem brauchen sie Organisationstalent, um ihren Arbeitsalltag zu strukturieren. Sie müssen in der Lage sein, ein Thema von Grund auf zu recherchieren und sich ständig weiterzubilden. Außerdem sollten sie wissen, wie die Suchmaschine mit dem G funktioniert. Was sich zunächst komisch anhört, kann ihre Arbeit erleichtern. Die meisten Codeschnipsel existieren bereits irgendwo im Internet, aber sie müssen wissen, wonach sie suchen und wo sie danach suchen. Und schließlich brauchen sie auch einen guten schriftlichen Ausdruck, um Berichte zu schreiben.

Persönliche Ratschläge von Wissal und Jean Pierre:

• Finden Sie heraus, in welcher Branche, Unternehmensgröße und Arbeitsumgebung Sie langfristig arbeiten möchten (z.B. durch ein Praktikum)
• Vergessen Sie die Soft Skills nicht! Manchmal sind sie nützlicher als harte Arbeit.
• Am Anfang ist es immer schwierig, geben Sie sich Zeit in Ihren Job hineinzuwachsen.
• Nehmen Sie Misserfolge in Kauf und lernen Sie daraus.
• Sie können jederzeit Ihre Wunschkarriere beginnen oder sich beruflich verändern!
