The goal of the course:

International students who come to Germany for their studies face various different challenges especially at the beginning. These include general intercultural communication differences to their home countries as well as oftentimes a significant language barrier. Participating in the International Orientation Weeeks is therefore a great first step to get settled not only in the city of Passau but also at the University.

However, it is improtant to keep in mind that intercultural differences also affect the communication and customs in science and in the academic field.

Knowing them is essential to all students in order for them to succeed at their studies and make use of their maximum potential. The aim of this course is to help international students with settling into the academic, linguistic and cultural environment in Passau by raising awareness of the cultural character of communication and demonstrating techniques, practices and customs that are common at German universities.

 

The idea:

This course was designed with the help of international students, who shared their personal experience when starting at the University of Passau.

The goal was to learn about the „oh, I wish I had known that beforehand“ – moments, so that  we can provide exactly that information right from the start. However, we also know that student life can be busy. Simultaneously juggling seminars and lectures as well as extra curriculars, work and free-time can be challenging; especially if one is new to the country. Therefore, aiming for easier accessibility as well as independency of time and place, the decision for an asynchronous self-learning online course format in ILIAS, that can provide exactly that, was made.

  • Module 4: Dealing with Literature
  • Module 5: Writing a Term Paper

Das Kursziel:

Internationale Studierende, die für ihr Studium nach Deutschland kommen, stehen gerade zu Beginn vor unterschiedlichen Herausforderungen. Dazu gehören allgemeine interkulturelle Kommunikationsunterschiede zu ihren Heimatländern sowie oft eine erhebliche Sprachbarriere. Die Teilnahme an den Internationalen Orientierungswochen ist daher ein toller erster Schritt, um sich nicht nur in der Stadt Passau, sondern auch an der Universität einzuleben.

Es ist jedoch wichtig zu bedenken, dass interkulturelle Unterschiede auch die Kommunikation und Gepflogenheiten in der Wissenschaft und im akademischen Bereich beeinflussen.

Diese zu kennen ist für alle Studierenden unerlässlich, um ihr Studium erfolgreich zu absolvieren und ihr volles Potenzial auszuschöpfen. Ziel dieses Kurses ist es, internationalen Studierenden das Einleben in das akademische, sprachliche und kulturelle Umfeld in Passau zu erleichtern, indem das Bewusstsein für den kulturellen Charakter der Kommunikation geschärft und Techniken, Praktiken und Gepflogenheiten aufgezeigt werden, die an deutschen Hochschulen üblich sind.

 

Die Idee:

Dieser Kurs wurde mit Hilfe internationaler Studierender konzipiert, die ihre persönlichen Erfahrungen bei ihrem Start an der Universität Passau geteilt haben.

Ziel war es, von den „Oh, hätte ich das doch vorher gewusst“-Momenten zu erfahren, um genau diese Informationen von Anfang an bereitstellen zu können. Wir wissen aber auch, dass das Studentenleben hektisch sein kann. Das gleichzeitige Jonglieren von Seminaren und Vorlesungen sowie außerschulischen Aktivitäten, Arbeit und Freizeit kann eine Herausforderung sein; besonders wenn man neu im Land ist. Daher fiel die Entscheidung mit dem Ziel einer leichteren Zugänglichkeit sowie Zeit- und Ortsunabhängigkeit auf ein asynchrones Online-Selbstlern Kursformat in ILIAS, das genau das leisten kann.
