A very simple, yet effective method for studying is using flash cards. You can use flash cards not only for vocabulary when learning a new language but also to memorize different concepts, definitions or answers to questions.

How do you use it? Very simple: take a stack of flash cards. On one side you only write down the name of the concept, the question you want to answer or the word you want to define. On the other side of the card you write down the explanation of the concept, the answer to your question or the definition of the word. Use one card per concept/ question/ definition. You are already learning by writing it all down by hand.

Once you have all your filled-out cards together, you can start the actual studying part: You look at the side of the card that has the question, name of the concept or word to define on it and try to answer it by yourself without looking at the solutions in the back or at your lecture notes. If you can answer it correctly, great! Put the card on a new stack with the cards that you already know. If you don’t know the solution, don’t worry, just put the card back into the stack of cards that you have yet to learn.

Our suggestion: make three different stacks of cards according to how well you know the answers, e.g. “Don’t know yet”, “Know it partly, but not super clear yet” and “Know it very well, could recite it in my sleep”. Repeat all the cards from all the stacks. Obviously, focus on the ones you don’t know yet, but also repeat the cards that you are already very sure about. You don’t want to forget them again!

Tip: if you don’t have flash cards, don’t worry! You can also use regular DIN A4 paper and cut it in two or four even parts and use those instead of flash cards.

Eine sehr einfache, aber effektive Methode zum Lernen ist die Verwendung von Karteikarten. ihr könnt Karteikarten nicht nur für Vokabeln verwenden, wenn ihr eine neue Sprache lernen, sondern auch, um sich verschiedene Konzepte, Definitionen oder Antworten auf Fragen einzuprägen.

Wie benutzt man sie? Ganz einfach: Nehmt einen Stapel Karteikarten. Auf eine Seite schreibt ihr nur den Namen des Begriffs, die Frage, die ihr beantworten wollt, oder das Wort, das ihr definieren wollt. Auf die andere Seite der Karte schreibt ihr die Erklärung des Begriffs, die Antwort auf eure Frage oder die Definition des Wortes. Verwendet eine Karte pro Begriff/Frage/Definition. Ihr lernt bereits, indem ihr alles mit der Hand aufschreibt.

Sobald ihr alle ausgefüllten Karten beisammen habt, könnt ihr mit dem eigentlichen Lernen beginnen: Ihr schaut auf die Seite der Karte, auf der die Frage, der Name des Begriffs oder das zu definierende Wort steht, und versucht, die Frage selbst zu beantworten, ohne auf die Lösungen auf der Rückseite oder auf deine Vorlesungsunterlagen zu schauen. Wenn ihr die Frage richtig beantworten könnt, super! Legt die Karte auf einen neuen Stapel mit den Karten, die ihr bereits kennt. Wenn ihr die Lösung nicht wisst, legt die Karte einfach zurück in den Stapel der Karten, die ihr noch lernen müsst.

Unser Vorschlag: Legt drei verschiedene Kartenstapel an, je nachdem, wie gut ihr die Antworten kennt, z. B. „Ich weiß es noch nicht“, „Ich weiß es teilweise, aber noch nicht sehr gut“ und „Ich weiß es sehr gut und könnte es im Schlaf aufsagen“. Wiederholt alle Karten von allen Stapeln. Konzentriert euch natürlich auf die Karten, die ihr noch nicht kennt, aber wiederholt auch die Karten, bei denen ihr euch bereits sehr sicher seid. Ihr wollt sie ja nicht wieder vergessen!

Tipp: Wenn ihr keine Karteikarten habt, ist das kein Problem! Ihr könnt auch normales DIN-A4-Papier verwenden, das ihr in zwei oder vier gleichmäßige Teile zerschneidet und diese anstelle der Karteikarten verwenden.
