Research Colloquium: Public Communication in Ukrainian Mariupol under Attack

Is it possible to survive without social networks, the internet, mobile communication and reliable information in a city under siege?

The public research colloquium will focus on types of communication during the information blockade in Mariupol, tools of propaganda influence, and the transformation of the city‘s media landscape under siege. The researcher and PICAIS-Fellow Dr. Olena Melnykova-Kurhanova has received a PICAIS-Fellowship at our university to analyze this and other questions concerning public communication in her hometown in Ukraine. On 21st February, she will share her experience of surviving in the besieged city and the first results of her research.

The event will be held as an open reflection seminar and will have a hybrid format (offline and online). It will be dedicated to the anniversary of the beginning of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war.

The research colloquium will be held in English. All members of the University of Passau and interested members of the public are cordially invited to the event.

The Passau International Centre for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies (PICAIS) is the central platform for academic excellence, interdisciplinary research and network-building at the University of Passau. Since summer 2021, it has been promoting research aligned with the University’rs strategic guiding themese: digitalisation, sustainable development and Europe. In organising two calls for paplications every year, it support innovative interdisciplinary project and event ideas both financially and by providing the necessary infractstructure.
