How do you break into the media industry? What opportunities and challenges await aspiring filmmakers and media professionals? And which skills are essential for building a successful career in such a dynamic field?

These questions will be explored by Rawan Darwish as part of the “Careers in Profile International” lecture series. The University of Passau alumnus will share his personal and professional journey—from Syria to studying in Passau and ultimately establishing himself as a filmmaker, media professional, and doctoral researcher in Germany.

Between 2018 and 2022, Rawan Darwish studied Media and Communication at the University of Passau, specializing in Film Studies and Communication Studies. Before beginning his degree, he completed a German language course to prepare for studying in Germany. During his time at the university, he gained practical experience in film, editing, and media production, worked at Studio Weichselbaumer, and spent two years as a student assistant at the International Office of the University of Passau.

After graduating in 2023, he moved to Frankfurt am Main and founded Darwish Productions, launching his career as an independent filmmaker and media producer. Since then, he has worked on a wide range of journalistic and creative media projects, overseeing productions from the initial concept and scriptwriting stages through filming, editing, and final publication.

His portfolio includes work as an editor for the film Unsere Heimat and as producer, production manager, and screenwriter for the film Drei. He has also collaborated with numerous institutions and media organizations, including Hessischer Rundfunk (HR), Südwestrundfunk (SWR), Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and Junges Soldaten Magazin.

Today, Rawan Darwish works as a media producer for the news platform Amal News and is involved in the BEGIN project as a job placement consultant and social worker. Alongside his professional activities, he is pursuing a PhD in the fields of data, artificial intelligence, and digital compliance.

During the talk, he will provide insights into his career path and discuss what it takes to succeed in the media industry. While creativity and technical expertise are important, he emphasizes that analytical thinking, communication skills, organizational abilities, and a commitment to continuous learning are equally essential.

One particularly inspiring aspect of his story is his experience entering the German media market as a non-native speaker. His journey demonstrates the value of perseverance, professionalism, and adaptability, while encouraging students not to be discouraged by structural barriers or unequal opportunities.

The event is especially relevant for students of Film Studies, Media and Communication, Journalism, Media Studies, and Audiovisual Media. However, anyone interested in film production, storytelling, journalism, or creative media careers is warmly invited to attend.
